Nom rencontré dans le Sud-Ouest (81, 46 notamment). Il correspond à un terme occitan, cogòt, qui peut avoir plusieurs sens : nuque, toupie notamment. Mais, comme anthroponyme, il semble correspondre au français cagot (emprunté d'ailleurs à l'occitan béarnais), terme qui désignait au départ un lépreux, ou encore celui qui habitait dans des vallées reculées.
